Vittorio Gassman
Born in Genoa in 1922, the son of a German building engineer and a Pisan mother Luisa Ambron, Vittorio Gassman interrupted his law studies to enrol at the Academy of Dramatic Arts for the 1941-42 season. Before completing his studies he made his stage debut alongside Alda Borelli in Niccodemi's La nemica (1943). He went on to establish himself as one of the most talented young actors in Italian theatre, working with the likes of Visconti, Guido Salvini and Luigi Squarzina and eventually becoming sole director of his own company (1954-55 season onwards). His repertoire from this period was enormous, ranging from A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams to Oreste by Alfieri, from the two Shakespearian classics Hamlet and Othello to Kean, or Disorder and Genius by Dumas père and Adelchi by Alessandro Manzoni. In 1977 he produced a splendid stage version of Pier Paolo Pasolini's drama Affabulazione. His work for television was also noteworthy, particularly in the extraordinarily successful entertainment show Il mattatore (Love and Larceny) directed by Daniele D'Anza in 1959 and in splendid small-screen adaptations of some of his greatest theatre successes. In 1946 he began a highly successful career in the cinema, an activity that was to take up an increasing amount of his time over the years. His most memorable performances include Persons Unknown (I soliti ignoti) (1958) and The Great War (La grande guerra) (1959) by Mario Monicelli, The Easy Life (Il sorpasso) (1962) and 15 From Rome (I mostri) (1963) by Dino Risi, L'armata Brancaleone (1966) again by Monicelli, Alibi (L'alibi) (1969) in which he was also co-director, In nome del popolo italiano (1971) and Scent of a Woman (Profumo di donna) (1974) by Dino Risi, We All Loved Each Other So Much (C'eravamo tanto amati) (1974) and The Terrace (La terrazza) (1980) by Ettore Scola, Lost Soul (Anima persa) (1977) and Dear Father (Caro papà) (1979) again with Risi, roles in A Wedding (1978) and Quintet (1978) by Robert Altman, and finally The Family (La famiglia) (1987) by Ettore Scola, The Sleazy Uncle (Lo zio indegno) (1989) by Franco Brusati and I'll Be Going Now (Tolgo il disturbo) (1990) by Dino Risi.
