Theater Augusteo
In 1922, to improve the communications with the neighborhood of the Vomero in continuous development, the town administration had approved a project for a funicular that, departing from street Rome and sottopassando the street Count of Grindstone, it had to bring up to the Vomero. To create a result to the traffic of the funicular a piazzetta was conceived to the exit of the inferior station, realized with the demolition of stable old men to angle among street Rome and street Count of Grindstone. These stable ones or part of them, are hypothesized that they have belonged to the ownership of Building Berio, marquis of Salza. The building had been made to build in 600 from a some Simon Vaez, dignified Count of Grindstone by the king of Spain. Before passing in marquis Berio's hands, the building, of which the primitive form is ignored, was of the Tomacellis, that gave charge to Luigi Vanvitelli to redraw its façade in 1772. Always in that year the great architect, on the occasion of the baptism of the Royal Infanta Carolina, built in the saloon from dance, that contained around 1000 people, a teatrino of 1600 places, preserving the plant to circular form of the saloon. The building crossed a period of great shine, above all for the hospitality and the munificence shown by the owners towards the artists. In fact, Francis Berio was man of vast culture, poet and collector of art and, not by chance, still today the building, or at least what he remains of it, it is known note with marquis Berio's name that so much contributed to make him famous. When in 1820 the marquis died, without male heirs, to make an exact division of the inheritance among the four daughters was had to sell a part of the building, giving so the away to the process of decadence of the imposing one and historian structure. Even if not of it him it is certain he can be hypothesized that among that stable demolished for lasciar I space to the piazzetta there was also a part of building Berio, and it is not to exclude, therefore, considered the actual position of the theater Augusteo, whose stage is situated above of the funicular, that this has been realized on the structure of the ancient theater vanvitelliano. Contemporarily to the realization of the funicular, the architect Pier Luigi Nerves, one among the teachers of the contemporary architecture not only Italian but international, among 26 and 29 it realized this imposing theater, among the greatest to European level in comparison to the epoch in which was built.
